Art Pick of the Week: Eduardo Kobra; "Dancer"

This work mesmerizes me like no other. I can't help but recall my performing years and those brief moments off stage before the next scene. There's such a tenderness to her and the moment that the artist captured.

Title: Untitled. The Theme is 'Dance' on 2nd Floor for the 'Going Vertical' project by The Sarasota Chalk Festival.
Artist: Eduardo Kobra
Where: Palm Avenue Garage. Stairwell just above Louie's Modern.

Why I chose it: This work mesmerizes me like no other. I can't help but recall my performing years and those brief moments off stage before the next scene. There's such a tenderness to her and the moment that the artist captured. It's a relaxed and contemplative moment that every dancer has experienced. The stark stairwell and bare light flesh out the truth of the wings of a performing space that the audience never really sees. Years ago while working at Radio City Music Hall, I'd often pass Rockettes resting in stairwells very similar to this one. This piece is also one of the most 'Instagrammed' pictures for Sarasota.

Art Pick of the Week: Doris Leeper, “Garden Sculpture 3”

Art Pick of the Week: Doris Leeper, “Garden Sculpture 3”

A well-traveled sculpture (this is the work’s third home in Sarasota since 2000), Doris Leeper’s “Garden Sculpture 3” now quietly resides on the corner of 1st and Orange.
