Epicurious: Toasted Mango Cafe
Did you know that the diner voted “Best in Florida” sits right here, in your own backyard? If you haven’t eaten at Toasted Mango Cafe, now is definitely the time. It’s a winner!
Epi•kyoo•ree•us/ noun / "A person who lives life in the constant pursuit of great food, drink, debauchery and open-minded adventure."
I’m slightly embarrassed to say that, even though it’s been 3 years, I hadn’t ever been. I wanted to. I meant to. I just never seemed to get there. Then, I saw the write-up on MSN that named it one of the best diners. They even went on to say that Toasted Mango Cafe was, “serving up the best breakfast in the Sunshine State.”
Whoa! Those are big words. How was this decided?
Well, for their list of best diners in every state, the writers at MSN scoured Yelp reviews, local newspapers, and culinary awards to find the most popular and beloved establishments. They defined a diner as a restaurant whose primary purpose was serving breakfast, and awarded bonus points to those open 24-7.
All I have to say is that even without those 24-7 “bonus” points, it won. That’s right, best diner in Florida!
Heck yeah, we’ve got a winner. Located at 430 N. Tamiami Trail, at the corner of 5th St. and just north of Fruitville Road, is where you’ll find some of the finest breakfast fare in America. Now, I speak from experience!
I mean, come on. Who can resist sweet and savory breakfast options (including Gluten free and vegetarian choices), reasonable prices, gigantic portions, the freshest ingredients and perfect homemade biscuits – practically the size of your head - served with freshly made mango butter? No one. Obviously.
I went for a late breakfast with my hubs. I had to have my main man join in again because, like me, he isn’t afraid to eat. We had serious food research to complete. In the name of food journalism we ordered the Toasted Mango Special, Sarasota Omelet, Homemade Corned Beef Hash (breakfast platter), a Toasted Mango Waffle and one of the weekly specials, Pecan Pie Pancakes.
Geez, go ahead. You can sing it… “She works hard for the money. So hard for you, honey.”
I’d like to report that it was one stellar breakfast. The Toasted Mango Special included some of the most perfectly seasoned (with cinnamon and vanilla) and powdered Texas-style French toast I’ve eaten. The omelet was huge, fluffy and completely stuffed (and topped, in this particular case) with fresh ingredients. The corned beef hash, with a little added Toasted Mango Cafe hot sauce, made me a believer – as I’ve never ordered it due to a less than pleasant childhood memory. And, oh, the Toasted Mango Waffle was literally to die for. It was so light, perfectly crisp and fluffy… all at the same time. The fresh mango, toasted coconut and dabs of whipped cream that topped the “waffle perfection” only sealed the deal to make it my all-time favorite. To summarize the entire experience I’d say, the search is over Sarasota, this is breakfast jubilation. (And, I hear that lunch is quite fantastic too.)
Toasted Mango Cafe is open daily from 7 A.M. to 3 P.M. and, recently, for dinner on Thursday through Saturday from 5:30 to 9:30 P.M. Don’t forget to visit the newest edition, Frosted Mango, either. It is a smoothie shop located next door. For a complete menu you can visit them on line at toastedmangocafe.com or like them on Facebook. Just try not to call (941) 388-7728, unless you’re experiencing a major waffle emergency or something equally important… it is a very busy place. Being #1 is hard work, people!
Instead, stop in, say hello and grab a meal. Reap the rewards of success. It’s pretty exciting to say you’ve had a mouthful of the best. #everybodylovesawinner
