Experience Sarasota: Fuzzy's Taco Shop

The fresh homemade food is great. The drinks are flowing. The restaurant space is open and perfect for late night hangouts. Don’t let the name fool you; Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is serious business.

Fuzzy’s Tacos.  I know, the name is a little strange but a taco by any other name surely wouldn’t taste as sweet. Or spicy. Or really any other way you’d like. Because Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on University offers it all.

The first Florida location of the popular Texas franchise, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop opened three months ago to huge crowds and they haven’t slowed down since. Open daily from 10 AM – 2 AM, you could spend the whole day there, starting with their breakfast tacos and going straight through to the full service bar specials.

The menu at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop offers myriad of traditional Tex-Mex cuisine. The breakfast options range from tacos to burritos to huevos rancheros and are served all day. You can find all the standard fare for lunch and dinner- Tacos, burritos, nachos, enchiladas and quesadillas- all served with an option of homemade sides.

In fact, almost everything Fuzzy’s serves is prepared in house.

They slow roast their Pork Butt for 15 hours in a convection oven before it makes its way to your plate. Ten pound brisket sides are cooked alongside the pork daily.

The restaurant goes through over 20 cases of Hass Avocadoes a week to make the freshest guacamole available. Fuzzy’s isn’t just throwing some Sysco delivered jarred sides onto a platter.

Their business model calls for high quality ingredients, and made-from-scratch recipes. It’s what sets Fuzzy’s apart from the budding Tex-Mex Fast Casual scene.

Oh, that and the bar, because Fuzzy’s Taco Shop has an impressive one. To go along with the 20 craft beers on tap, Fuzzy’s has a lengthy tequila list. Including Blanco, Reposado an Anejo Blue Agave Tequilas, you can select from over 30 different bottles.

Can’t decide which tequila works best for you? No problem, just order one of Fuzzy’s Tequila Flights, where you have the option to try three half pours with a side of Fuzzy’s Homemade Sangrita - a mixture of tomato, cilantro, lime, and spices that acts as a soothing chaser.

It’s not all tequila either. Fuzzy’s bartenders also have a long list of Fuzzy Cocktails and the famous Fuzzy Ritas. Need more than that? How about a Big Ass Beer Rita. The name isn’t lying either. It’s a giant margarita combined with a selected brew for a perfect pairing of beer and booze.

What’s the best time to come in and try some of Fuzzy’s delicious tacos and cold drinks, you ask? Well, you could try Happy Hour every day from 3:30-6:30 or Fuzzy’s Late Night Specials, 10PM-12AM Sunday-Thursday. Fuzzy’s also runs a weekly trivia night on Tuesdays starting at 8PM and live music on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Don’t know where to catch all the games during football season? That’s fine, because Fuzzy’s Taco Shop will be broadcasting all NFL games live on their multitude of hanging flat screens along with drink specials every Sunday afternoon to celebrate your team’s victory or mourn them for being terrible.

With plans to open at least four more locations over the next couple years in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, Fuzzy’s will quickly become a major player in Sarasota cuisine. The fresh homemade food is great. The drinks are flowing. The restaurant space is open and perfect for late night hangouts. Don’t let the name fool you; Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is serious business.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is located at 2515 University Parkway, just West of Tuttle Rd. You can check out all their upcoming events and specials on their Facebook Page.
