When The Giving Gets Good, The Good Gets Giving (How Good Are You?)

The Giving Challenge is a 24-hour fundraising initiative taking place September 1st through September 2nd from noon to noon. Hosted by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the challenge is celebrating its fourth year and has over 450 local organizations registered.

It’s been said that one of the ways to achieve true prosperity is through philanthropy. Enriching the community where you live by giving back inevitably bolsters its overall success. That’s probably why so many people in the Sarasota and Manatee area are getting ready to donate during the 2015 Giving Challenge.

The Giving Challenge is a 24-hour fundraising initiative taking place September 1st through September 2nd from noon to noon.  Hosted by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the challenge is celebrating its fourth year and has over 450 local organizations registered.

These details are great and all, but you’re probably left still wondering what is The Giving Challenge? The online fundraising drive is managed through The Giving Partner website.

“In order to participate, each organization created an in-depth profile in the Giving Partner online tool,” says Susie Bowie, the Vice President of Philanthropic Education and Marketing for the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

The Giving Partner tool allows donors to see exactly where their money is going and to give them a full scope of the organization. “We want everyone to have access to transparent information,” says Bowie.

With a whopping 450 organizations, this is the highest number of participating organizations The Giving Challenge has had in its four years. While the Community Foundation of Sarasota County is the hosting philanthropic body, other partners such as The Patterson Foundation, The William G. and Marie Selby Foundation and The Manatee Community Foundation.

What’s even more incredible is the generous matching pledge from the partners. Every donation provided to an organization who is appearing in The Giving Challenge for the first time this year will be matched up to $250.

“We’ve never heard of an incentive like this,” says Bowie.

Through the power of social media, this event has generated an enormous amount of buzz among supporters of the various participating organizations throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Another social aspect of spreading awareness of the challenge involves the option for organizations to create promotional videos which had to be self-produced using their own resources.

“People have come up with a lot of exciting ideas,” says Bowie. “Typically, organizations that have the most tend to be the most successful.”

The actual donation website (www.givingpartnerchallenge.org) presents a “live” leaderboard and real-time results of the current fundraising totals for the participating organizations, which are updated every 60 seconds. And donors shouldn’t be surprised if they receive personalized thank you messages from the organizations as each donation provides the organization a unique URL to thank their donors individually.

Although, donors are encouraged to engage in the experience through more than just their donations. The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is providing a Donor Lounge where supporters can come out and enjoy free activities and interact with representatives from some of the organizations.

If you can’t join the fun in person, follow The Giving Partner on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with this exciting philanthropic effort. For many hopeful local organizations, it will be a thrilling and equally challenging 24 hours. Check out these worthy causes by using the searchable social media #GivingChallenge15 to see the latest news and updates. Don’t forget to cheer on your favorite participating organizations using the same hashtag. Best of luck to all of the organizations that help make Sarasota awesome!
